Sussex garden visits
Wednesday 12 June @ 11:00 am - 5:00 pm£20
11.00am: Halnaker Park Cottage, Park Lane, Halnaker, near Chichester, PO18 0QH. The gardens of Richard and Jill Hunt have many glorious climbing, rambling and shrub roses in a spacious setting, once part of the nearby Goodwood Estate. (Extensive rose list available.) Members are welcome to bring a picnic to eat in the gardens or lunch at a local pub. For more details contact Mary Hember.
Afternoon: visit two village gardens.
2.30pm: Pear Tree Cottage, The Street, Walberton, BN18 0PY. The home of Brenda and Charles Dixon is a 16th century thatched house with roses growing up the walls. From being a child-friendly family garden, this small cottage garden now has about 80 roses old and new in beds of mixed roses and herbaceous perennials.
3.30pm: Grasmere Cottage, The Street, Walberton BN18 0PG (just across the road) belongs to Martin and Ann Cannings, our former membership secretary. Their small south-facing walled garden is mainly laid to lawn with c. 50 roses of mostly old rose varieties amongst perennials and annuals in a long west-facing herbaceous border, and with a rambler along the east-facing wall. It has evolved in a serendipitous way over 20 years and benefits from the kind climate of the Coastal Plain sheltered by the South Downs and the Isle of Wight. Afternoon tea will be available.
Cost for the day: £20 per person.
