SUMMARY:Romantic Rousham
DESCRIPTION:Roses at Rousham \nRousham\, near Bicester: We meet at 10:30 at Rousham House and Gardens for a private tour led by our highly knowledgeable and experienced chairman\, Michael Marriott. \nRousham Rill \nDescribed by the owners as “completely unspoilt and uncommercialised”\, the eighteenth century pleasure grounds at Rousham are largely unchanged since the time of William Kent. There are also three seventeenth century walled gardens\, packed with old roses and tumbling perennial plants. There are a number of unidentified Gallica roses at Rousham which our members are invited to identify. After a leisurely picnic lunch within the garden we will spend time in the afternoon exploring the rest of the extensive and highly picturesque grounds (bring your own picnic). \n \nPhoto credits Michael Marriott

SUMMARY:Romantic Ledbury Gardens - 19 June
DESCRIPTION:The Hope \nMorning: The Hope\, near Ledbury. The home and private garden of Shane and Candy Connolly. Shane is the florist who orchestrated the flowers at the King and Queen’s coronation last year\, and who is a great champion of ethical flowers and floristry. His garden is a charming and relaxed arrangement of ‘rooms’ around the sturdy farmhouse\, with established old rambling roses and younger shrub roses\, an appealing pond area\, and a happy atmosphere. We are kindly invited to bring our picnics to enjoy in the garden. Alternatively there are good places to eat in the nearby picturesque town of Ledbury. \n  \nLittle Malvern Court \nAfternoon: Little Malvern Court\, also near Ledbury. Until very recently this glorious rambling 15th Century prior’s hall has been lived in by members of the same family for 500 years. A recently refreshed rose garden\, limpid ponds crammed with lilies\, wonderful bulging topiary hedges\, sweeping lawns and meadows\, mature gardens lovingly maintained and brimming with romance. Tearoom open until 5pm. \nThe price for the day is £25 for members and £30 for non-members. \n

SUMMARY:Cuttings day at Carolside
DESCRIPTION:Once again\, Mrs Rose Foyle has kindly agreed to host a day for HRG members to visit Carolside near Lauder in the Scottish Borders to take cuttings from the roses in her extensive collections. \nThe date of 22 November is around a month later than that of last year’s exercise. Whilst the general lack of success then may be attributable in part to the very cold subsequent winter and spring\, this year’s timing should ensure fully hardened material for cuttings. We plan to try to propagate some of the rarer varieties in the collection to create a dispersed reserve\, as well as give members an opportunity to acquire roses that might not be easily obtained otherwise. \nBecause of the lateness in the year\, the day will start at 11am. \nIf you would like to join the group for this day at Carolside please contact John West.

SUMMARY:Visit to Wiltshire gardens
DESCRIPTION:We will be visiting two wonderful gardens in Wiltshire\, not far from Chippenham\, both of which have collections of historic roses and are enchanting. \n\nCadenham Manor This glorious four-acre garden is made up of a series of rooms around a listed manor house and dovecot.  Divided by yew hedges and moats\, the garden rooms are furnished with specimen trees\, mixed borders and stunning displays of old roses plus fountains and statues to focus the eye. There are at least 70 varieties of both shrub and climbing roses\, the great majority of which are historic ones and a few as yet unnamed. The garden has a magical atmosphere with its old stone walls and buildings combined with the moat and some modern day design updates by the notable garden designer James Alexander-Sinclair.\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n  \n\nGreat Chalfield The gardens\, orchards and water features were designed on Arts and Crafts principles by Alfred Parsons and Captain Partridge to complement the restoration of the superb manor in the early 20th century. The garden is divided into a number of different areas\, many of them containing roses. Some date back over 100 years and are still going strong\, including a magnificent climbing Mme Caroline Testout. While most of the roses are historic\, some are more recent\, having been introduced in the 20th century. The roses vary from the very well-known and often seen like Rambling Rector and Wedding Day through ones much less so like Bennet’s Seedling\, Lady Waterlow and Blushing Lucy. And as at Cadenham there are some unidentified ones that we can stand round and ponder.\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nPrice £30 for HRG members\, £40 for non-members (must attend with a member). \nIf you would like to book or have any queries\, please email historicrosesgroup@gmail.com \nWe will meet at Cadenham Manor (SN15 4NH\, directions on website) at 10.30am for coffee and an introductory talk by Victoria Nye\, the owner\, followed by a tour of the garden from 11am. \nAfter lunch (perhaps together in a local pub\, if liked) we will reassemble at Great Chalfield Manor\, Atworth (SN12 8NH) at 3pm. As there is also an NGS open day on this day\, perhaps it would be best if we were to assemble in the car park before going in. The very interesting house can also be visited for an additional £3.
