SUMMARY: The Deane House - near Winchester
DESCRIPTION:The Deane House\, Sparsholt\, near Winchester\, SO2 1LR \nMr and Mrs Morse’s spacious garden is on several levels\, with wonderful views onto the countryside. There is a walled garden with many roses\, magnificent copper beech and tulip trees\, plus stained glass and modern water features. Further interest is provided by the connection with Jane Austin\, whose friends the Harwoods lived here. Jane visited often and spoke of it in her letters. The church is also interesting: when it was rebuilt in 1818 Coade Stone was extensively used. You can find further information at https://ngs.org.uk/gardens/the-deane-house-so2/ \nBooking: The cost of the visit is £25 per person (HRG members\, non-members £30)\, which includes a ploughman’s style lunch. Please book by 18 May. If you have any dietary requirements\, please contact Chrissi Knights at bertie.knights@rocketmail.com \nDirections to The Deane House: On arrival there will be the NGS signs for everyone to spot. Off A3049 Stockbridge Rd\, onto Woodman Lane\, signed Sparsholt. Turn left at the cream house with green gables on the left and go to the top of the drive. There is plenty of parking. Warning: Do not follow the instructions provided by satnavs. Use instead the location in What3words: grapevine.socket.skips

SUMMARY:Wine and Roses at Mottisfont
DESCRIPTION:Wine and Roses: An Evening at Mottisfont \nA unique opportunity to visit Mottisfont without the crowds. \nMottisfont is celebrated for its internationally significant rose gardens. It is home to the National Collection of Historic Roses\, and recently there has been a renewal of these roses and improvements to the companion planting. \nWe will have Mottisfont to ourselves for the evening\, with wine or sparking soft drinks and refreshments included. The paths at Mottisfont are narrow\, and so Michael Harvey\, the Senior Gardener\, has offered us two tours for 15 people each. While one group are having their tour the other group will be able to look around the other gardens at Mottisfont. \nMottisfont Abbey has a long and fascinating history\, dating back to the thirteenth century. Initially an Augustinian priory\, it was converted into a home for the first Baron Sandys in 1536\, and remained with his descendants for nearly four centuries. In 1934\, Maud and Gilbert Russell purchased Mottisfont\, and in the former entrance hall commissioned the artist Rex Whistler to paint a ‘Gothic’ mural celebrating the house’s medieval origins. Mottisfont is now noted not only for its roses but also for its important collection of 20th-century art. \nBooking: £20 per person (HRG members\, non-members £25) including a glass of wine or non-alcoholic drink and nibbles. As everyone will get exclusive access to the gardens without any members of public there will not be any reduction for membership of the National Trust. Please book by 18 May. \nDirections to the gardens: https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/hampshire/mottisfont
