SUMMARY: The Deane House - near Winchester
DESCRIPTION:The Deane House\, Sparsholt\, near Winchester\, SO2 1LR \nMr and Mrs Morse’s spacious garden is on several levels\, with wonderful views onto the countryside. There is a walled garden with many roses\, magnificent copper beech and tulip trees\, plus stained glass and modern water features. Further interest is provided by the connection with Jane Austin\, whose friends the Harwoods lived here. Jane visited often and spoke of it in her letters. The church is also interesting: when it was rebuilt in 1818 Coade Stone was extensively used. You can find further information at https://ngs.org.uk/gardens/the-deane-house-so2/ \nBooking: The cost of the visit is £25 per person (HRG members\, non-members £30)\, which includes a ploughman’s style lunch. Please book by 18 May. If you have any dietary requirements\, please contact Chrissi Knights at bertie.knights@rocketmail.com \nDirections to The Deane House: On arrival there will be the NGS signs for everyone to spot. Off A3049 Stockbridge Rd\, onto Woodman Lane\, signed Sparsholt. Turn left at the cream house with green gables on the left and go to the top of the drive. There is plenty of parking. Warning: Do not follow the instructions provided by satnavs. Use instead the location in What3words: grapevine.socket.skips

SUMMARY:Wine and Roses at Mottisfont
DESCRIPTION:Wine and Roses: An Evening at Mottisfont \nA unique opportunity to visit Mottisfont without the crowds. \nMottisfont is celebrated for its internationally significant rose gardens. It is home to the National Collection of Historic Roses\, and recently there has been a renewal of these roses and improvements to the companion planting. \nWe will have Mottisfont to ourselves for the evening\, with wine or sparking soft drinks and refreshments included. The paths at Mottisfont are narrow\, and so Michael Harvey\, the Senior Gardener\, has offered us two tours for 15 people each. While one group are having their tour the other group will be able to look around the other gardens at Mottisfont. \nMottisfont Abbey has a long and fascinating history\, dating back to the thirteenth century. Initially an Augustinian priory\, it was converted into a home for the first Baron Sandys in 1536\, and remained with his descendants for nearly four centuries. In 1934\, Maud and Gilbert Russell purchased Mottisfont\, and in the former entrance hall commissioned the artist Rex Whistler to paint a ‘Gothic’ mural celebrating the house’s medieval origins. Mottisfont is now noted not only for its roses but also for its important collection of 20th-century art. \nBooking: £20 per person (HRG members\, non-members £25) including a glass of wine or non-alcoholic drink and nibbles. As everyone will get exclusive access to the gardens without any members of public there will not be any reduction for membership of the National Trust. Please book by 18 May. \nDirections to the gardens: https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/hampshire/mottisfont

SUMMARY:Bentworth Lodge
DESCRIPTION:Bentworth Lodge near Alton\, Hampshire\, GU34 5JS \nRosemary Andreae has redesigned the long classic English herbaceous borders of her impressive garden. In addition it features Victorian topiary\, sweeping lawns\, a 120 ft old rose border backed by a pergola of climbing and rambling roses\, plus old and modern roses surrounding a fishpond\, banks of contrasting rose favourites and a modern HT border. The long pergola walk is laden with wonderful climbing roses and there are roses adorning the lodge. There is a formal rose garden that leads to the long herbaceous border. Peter Andreae is passionate about trees and the grounds have wonderful majestic trees\, including a huge tulip tree\, which resurrected itself from the storm of 1987. Lunch can be taken in a nearby country pub. \nBooking: £10.00 per head (HRG members\, non-members £12.50) including refreshments. There is plenty of parking. Please book by 10 May. Visitors should bring gumboots in order to walk across a field to the simple pond garden if they wish. There are only a couple of types of roses there but the large pond is attractive. It will be signed from the drive. \nDirections to Bentworth Lodge: Bentworth Lodge can be difficult to find. iPhones and Waze usually bring you up the drive\, but older car satnavs may go wrong at the end\, directing you to a farm track off Well Lane. Please do not go down Well Lane or you will get lost. It is not possible to stop on the main road so visitors need to look at the map earlier; or if they overshoot\, to drive on until they can turn round. On 27 May there will be a house sign on the main road.

SUMMARY:Visit to St Andrews in Fife
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday 25th June an afternoon visit has been arranged to the garden of Mrs June Baxter in St Andrews. This is a return visit to the charming garden hidden behind one of the main streets in St Andrews\, and some members will remember seeing the abundance of roses there in 2010 and as part of the Scottish tour in 2011. \nThis is the second of two visits in late June to gardens in Scotland (the first is to Starrbank in Fife). The two garden visits are on successive days\, in the same general area and would suit an overnight stay between them for members travelling for both events. \nFor further information contact John West at johnwest@btconnect.com or 01505 850 483

SUMMARY:Cuttings day at Carolside in the Scottish Borders
DESCRIPTION:Mrs Rose Foyle has very kindly agreed to host another cuttings and propagation day at Carolside. This will be an opportunity to obtain cutting material to propagate from the extensive collection of old roses at Carolside\, both for members’ own enjoyment and to help provide a backup for some of the rare varieties. \nThe date set is Wednesday 5th August at 11.00 am. There may not be quite so many roses in bloom as in high summer\, but hopefully conditions will be right for successful propagation from the Carolside collection. \nFor further information contact John West at JohnWest@btconnect.com or 0150 585 0483
