Scottish and Northern summer visits – Jackson’s Wold and Castle Howard

Wednesday 25 June - Thursday 26 June

Arrangements have been finalised for two visits in late June to gardens in North Yorkshire.

The first is to Jackson’s Wold Garden near Sherburn (YO17 8QJ) and is scheduled for the afternoon of Wednesday June 25th. Mr and Mrs Cundall have developed the three acre gardens at their farm on the Yorkshire Wolds over the last forty years to include a wide range of planting and design. In addition to stunning views the gardens include one that is south facing, a woodland garden, kitchen garden, courtyard and walled garden. Whilst the whole garden is an horticultural heaven, roses have pride of place throughout.

Mrs Cundall will introduce the gardens and take us on an initial tour around then leave us to wander at will before resorting to the barn for tea.

The second visit is to be on the following day – Thursday 26th June – to the gardens of Castle Howard (YO60 7DA). This baroque mansion is surrounded by a notable designed landscape of temples, monuments, lakes and fountains. However, our particular interest on this visit will be the walled gardens where, as at Jackson’s Wold, roses are in abundance. There is a formal rose garden, a sundial garden, Lady Celia’s garden and the Venus garden as well as a potager.

It is hoped that Alastair Gunn, the head of gardens and landscape, will be available to give a brief outline of the development of these various elements into this fine ensemble.

These gardens are within a few miles of one another and lie in the area roughly bounded by Malton, Scarborough, and York.
